A thrilling combination of theatre and urban culture, featuring a heady mix of dance, live music and ‘flatland’ BMX.
They say to master anything completely you have to practice for 10,000 hours. Years of holding, spinning, gliding, hopping and inevitably falling.
Balbir based Champion of the Flatlands on the real-life tale of a champion BMXer Keelan Phillips, who performed in many of its earlier outings. A passionate tale of dedication and perseverance; embracing failure, conquering nerves and overcoming self-doubt. Enter a world where difference is celebrated and trust is essential. Artists and athletes interchange, they follow their calling, and never stop moving.
This non-stop movement-based piece, performed to live jazz saxophone and tabla, inspired and amazed wherever it appeared. It was performed in both indoor and outdoor spaces in urban centres and on tour in rural areas, at festivals such as that in London’s Southbank and as far afield as Canada.
Often presented alongside the other pieces in Balbir Singh’s Two Wheeled Trilogy, Champion of the Flatlands also found a ready audience in schools, where it was a popular part of BSDC’s educational programme.
