‘I used to think I was the strangest person in the world, but then I thought: there are so many people in the world, there must be someone just like me, who feels bizarre and flawed in the same way as I do. I would imagine her and imagine that she must be out there thinking of me too.’ – Frida Kahlo
The Two Fridas is a fusion of dance, music and art that tells the story of two major artists of the twentieth century: Amrita Sher-Gil and Frida Kahlo.
Named after Frida Kahlo’s painting of the same name, the performance combines classical Indian Kathak with western contemporary dance, Mexican dance and live music to celebrate the lives of Frida and Amrita.
The two painters had much in common: they shared a love of colour and self-portraits, experienced agonies of love and were revolutionary in their day. Yet they never met – they were ‘united yet apart.’
The work was part of an exciting creative partnership with Billingham International Festival Of World Dance, an arrangement that gave Balbir the opportunity to involve folk dancers and musians from across the world, including Hungary and Mexico, in its production.
